The annual Seoul Outdoor Library is definitely something you’ll want to ‘bookmark’ for your next South Korea trip and it returns in spring 2026!
From 23 April 2026 to June, and September to October, the Seoul Outdoor Library pops up in several picturesque locations across the city. Seoul is known for its Instagrammable libraries like Starfield Library at COEX near Gangnam and this is a welcome addition to Seoul’s roster of annual cultural events.

Each of the three Seoul Outdoor Libraries provides chairs, books and entertainment including an alfresco library which opens along the city’s Cheonggyecheon stream near Dongdaemun.
From locations to opening hours, here is our guide to Seoul Outdoor Library plus photos – we visited in October 2024 and May 2025 and will again in May 2026.

Where is the Seoul Outdoor Library?
There are currently three locations – Seoul Plaza (the biggest of the reading spaces with a music stage), Gwanghwamun Square and a new third location, Cheonggyecheon stream.
All three Seoul Outdoor Libraries are within walking distance of each other so you could combine all three for an epic reading session.

For us, the most picturesque is Seoul Outdoor Library at Cheonggyecheon stream. It looks so pretty next to the water and you can even use stepping stones to get between the two ‘banks’ of the library.
On our last visit here, readers were joined by a huge heron who was trying to catch fish as people looked on, engrossed in their books. This has to be a unique library experience!
You can also combine a library trip with a visit to Myeongdong, a 10 to 15 minute walk away from Seoul Plaza and Cheonggyecheon.

Seoul Outdoor Library opening times
An annual event, Seoul Outdoor Library 2026 usually runs every Friday to Sunday, from 23 April 2026 to June and September to early November each year.
The 2026 Seoul Outdoor Library opening times are still TBC but in 2025, the Seoul Outdoor Library confirmed times are 11am to 6pm every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. During the summer months there may be occasional later openings.

How to get to Seoul Outdoor Library
For the Seoul Plaza and Cheonggyecheon Stream locations, take the Seoul Metro on line 2 (central line) to Euljiro 1 Station (closer to Seoul Plaza) or Jong-Gag Station (closer to Cheonggyecheon).
For Gwanghwamun Square, head to the Gwanghwamun station and take exit 1.

What to expect
We visited both the Seoul Plaza and Cheonggyecheon Seoul Outdoor Libraries in October 2024 and May 2025.
Seoul Plaza outdoor library was the biggest site, taking over the whole square outside City Hall.
There were dozens of inflatable cushions and sofas, food and drink stalls plus live music, from singing to jazz. It was a really nice atmosphere and organizers had spread around 5,000 books across the site for people to read.

We should say that the Seoul Outdoor libraries are just as much about the social element as they are about alfresco reading. Friends, workers and couples meet up in the evenings at the outdoor libraries to chat, mingle and even read the occasional novel.
There are lots of pop-up activations and the event schedule changes every week.

Just a short 5 minute walk away from Seoul Plaza brings you to the Cheonggyecheon Stream, which is just a magical location.

Around 200 chairs, tables and reading lamps have popped up along the stream, with ambient lighting for the evening and a DJ.
Staff were also on hand to bring blankets to readers who were getting chilly – the Seoul Outdoor Library locations have staff on hand should you have any enquiries or need assistance.

We haven’t visited the outdoor library at Seoul Gwanghwamun Square yet but there is an indoor reading room for wet weather days in Seoul plus a local food market.
Lovely to see, the Seoul Outdoor Libraries are a ‘novel’ approach and popular annual event, a great way to inspire people about reading and local culture.
