Abebe Bakery – Locations and Opening Hours
As of Autumn 2024, there are currently three Abebe Bakery locations – two in South Korea and one in Tokyo, Japan.
We visited the Seoul Abebe Bakery branch near Gwangjang Market which is open from 10am to 7pm daily.

The Abebe Bakery original Jeju island branch (where the delicious donut magic all started) is open from 10am to 9pm daily) at Dongmun Market gate 12. Read our guide to Dongmun Market on Jeju here >

Why is South Korea’s Abebe Bakery so popular?
In short, it’s because they have over 40 flavors of cream bread / cream filled donut, it is a very inexpensive yet epic dessert and mainly because it is freakin’ delicious but also so filling.
Such is the low price-point and beautiful / colorful look of the Abebe Bakery donuts, we saw people buying boxes full at a time to either eat at home or share with friends and family as gooey gourmet gifts.

Abebe Bakery also showcases the best of South Korea’s natural ingredients like Jeju oranges, peanuts and matcha green tea.

Our Experience at Abebe Bakery Jeju in Seoul
Although we’ve been to Jeju Island, it wasn’t until we recently revisited Seoul’s Gwangjang Market in autumn 2024 that we discovered this new (ish) branch of Abebe Bakery.

A short walk from one of Gwangjang Market’s main entrances (gate 12) and across the road from Cheonggyecheon stream (famous for its Seoul Outdoor Library), we first spotted Abebe Bakery because of the huge queue outside, that was three-fold. We visited on a busy Saturday morning so it might be quieter on weekdays.

We joined the third lane of the bakery line-up outside and had to wait for around 15 minutes before we got our first glimpse of the Abebe Bakery interior.
A colorful world of cream filled donuts, coffees and tea awaits – there are lots of posters outside the shop showing what awaits inside like milk tea taro cream bread and sweet potato cream doughnuts.

Abebe Bakery cream bread / donut flavors and taste
Once you’ve got inside the shop, two cabinets of choice creamy donuts awaits – it is heavenly. The queue moves quite fast once you are inside so make your dessert decisions quickly.
We bought two Abebe Bakery cream filled donuts to see what all the fuss was about but many others were buying boxes full – could it be that good?!

Based on the colors and flaky toppings, we opted for the pistachio donut (so green including the cream inside) plus Lotus biscoff cream filled bread.

We paid at the counter and took our cream bread donuts upstairs to eat – as well as the bakery shop downstairs, there are two floors above to eat and drink plus a toilet.
Given how busy the line was downstairs, the seating area was surprisingly quiet in Abebe Bakery so most people must take them home to eat. Good choice!

We really enjoyed our creamy donuts but they are very filling and very messy – the weight of the cream inside popped out of one of our cream breads plus the lotus biscoff toppings on the outside fell on the table quite easily. But hey, messy is fine when it tastes pretty pretty good.
One donut per person is definitely more than enough – as they are so rich and cream-filled, we couldn’t finish both.

Abebe Bakery Donut Flavors and Prices
As mentioned, we found the prices at Abebe Bakery Seoul very reasonable – our Lotus Biscoff cream filled donut cost just 2,900 Won in October 2024 (that is about £1.60 or $2.10 USD).
This is so cheap for such a big dessert! Most of the cream donuts cost 2,900 Won to 3,500 Won whilst the cream breads cost 3,500 Won to 4,700 Won.
Some of the more exotic varieties like black sesame rice cake cost upwards of 4,000 Won.

As a comparison, CU Convenience stores in South Korea have several flavors of cream bread which is quite famous and often sells out. That retails for between 2,700 Won and 2,900 Won depending on the flavor – so Abebe Bakery is comparison is such good value for a fresher product with more filling and flavors.
Example Abebe Bakery donut flavors in South Korea include:
- Coconut, chocolate cream or strawberry (three of the more ‘standard’ flavors)
- Matcha tea
- Omegi Mugwort cream bread
- Apple cream bread
- Apple Mange Yogurt cream donuts
- Basil onion cream bread
- Black sesame rice cake donuts plus about another 30 flavors
